New Life for an Old Silverware Chest

One afternoon while browsing through a thrift shop I found an old silverware chest.

The exterior was in fairly good condition but the inside was very shabby. The price was quite reasonable so I bought it to use as a jewelry display.

I refurbished the inside using foam core board, quilt batting and drapery satin.

It is now a very elegant display and I plan to use it for special pieces of jewelry.

What a FANTASTIC idea for a jewelry display.

The way you've redone the interior looks like you could possibly also hang lightweight items (like earrings) on the inside of the opened lid.

I agree, customers will approach this elegant display expecting to see your special pieces - and I know they won't be disappointed!

It's amazing what an artist can do when she sees past what an item is, and envisions what it could be after a bit of DIY love.

Someone gave me one of these several years ago and I never used it. It didn't quite fit the type of jewelry I was doing. I almost gave it to Goodwill a few weeks ago!

I'm developing a new line of more elegant and pricey jewelry, and wanted something to make this new line "stand out" at a show. This will be perfect! Thanks for reminding me of what I had. Lining it with thin quilt batting and velvet will let me pin some of the items in, and use the lid, too! I do a lot of outdoor shows and farmers markets and many displays blow around, so this addresses many needs for me.

What a great idea! I received one as a wedding present 16 years ago and have never used it. Now I just need to find it... It's been packed in a box somewhere since we moved 9 years ago.

Silver Cloth site

You have a great site and wanted to share a source for Silver fabric for lining the chests OR could be used for different uses. I buy the Silver anti-tarnishing cloth to keep tarnishing down in my storage boxes used for all silver metals. I use pinking shears to cut in different sizes and use where needed. I also plan on making oblong cloths to lay over my display trays between shows, just stack them and insert in my Carry bag for shows. I also buy their Polishing fabric by the yard and make Complimentry cleaning&polishing cloths for my Customers that purchase my Designs. I cut with pinking shears and insert with several business cards in a clear plastic bag, my Customers just love the gift. For $20 I buy a yd and make 80 polishing cloths. Little long on comment but hopefully it was helpfull. If anyone is interested check the site for fabric and you can also buy the Silverware boxes too. No interest in Company or know no one there just a great source.
