Homemade gift tags - can you guess what they're made from?

Homemade gift tags - can you guess what they're made from?

Homemade gift tags are a lovely touch to add to your jewelry packaging. When folded, as shown above, these measure 1.75" x 2" (4.5 cm x 5 cm) - perfectly sized for most jewelry pouches and boxes.

This is a great way to make it even more convenient for customers to give your jewelry as gifts. All they have to do is write their message inside the little handmade gift card, and the present is ready to give!

I started making these homemade gift tags several years ago when I couldn't find any commercially made ones that were the right size for jewelry.

All of the tags I found looked enormous next to a jewelry pouch or box, making the actual present look tiny by comparison!

So I came up with the idea of using pretty sheets of perforated, "print your own" business card stock:

Because they're intended as business cards, they usually have a distinct design printed on one half of the card, with the other half empty.

I use the part with the design as the front of my homemade gift tags.

I bought several packages of these tear-apart business cards in different designs, on clearance from a local office supply store.

All you have to do is fold them back and forth a few times along the perforated lines to separate the cards:

Then fold the business cards in half to make nice little homemade gift tags:

Depending on the design that comes printed on the business card, the finished tag may look more "right side up" with the fold as the top edge instead of as the side edge.

You can punch a hole in the corner if you'd like to add a piece of ribbon, jute, or other way of fastening the tag to your jewelry gift pouch or box.

I like having a variety of these all ready to go, and while I ring up the sale I keep my customers busy by having them look through the gift tags to choose the ones they want to accompany their purchases.

They often sign the little homemade gift tag right away, so that by the time they leave my booth their jewelry gift is completely ready to give!

If you wanted to customize these to your jewelry business, you could use your computer's printer to print your business name and contact info on the area that will be the back half of the gift tag, before you separate the cards from the sheet.

People often keep cards that have a personal message written inside by a loved one, so having your info discreetly on the back may lead to future sales.

Love you idea!

I love you idea. I use the same type of thing for my own jewelry tags and even hang my necklace and earrings from them for my displays. You could even use your own photo of the jewelry for advertising.. I use my logo.
Keep up the good work.

A Great Idea, congrats and thanks for sharing.

Very creative

I love when you can find other uses for items. I use my business cards folded almost in half for price tags, I leave a little space on the bottom folded piece to put my price, which can be cut off when given as a gift. I then tie onto my pocketbooks with a pretty ribbon. People usually will look at tags even if they don"t purchase, so put your name or logo somewhere on the tag.

Wonderful idea

Thanks for sharing this great tip. It definitely add a nice touch to the purchase, and customers love to have bonuses. I would definitely use my own logo to make some.

Terrific Idea...
by: Elaine's Crystal Garden

I'm always looking for new and innovative package ideas for my jewelry and that's a homerun! A lot of my customers purchase as gifts and I like the idea of a ready to give package. Who wants to run around to find a card, find a gift bag, this way, it's complete. Thanks for sharing!

tags for jewelry sets
by: Philonese

I need ideas to attach or keep together bracelet and earring sets and necklace and earring sets. I have my jewelry displayed in various places and when there is a set I want them tagged together. There are racks for earrings, t-bars for necklaces and bracelets, necklace stands but if you have quite a few sets I need a tag that will allow me to keep them attached together.
Any ideas or sites. I have found the fold over tags that I can put around necklaces, but they are not on many sites. Maybe I can fold it over and put the earring cards in the fold over part.

Tagging the set together
by: Virginie

If you really want to tag all the set together, what about if you tie everything with a pretty ribbon, including the earring card somehow (if they are handmade, you could punch a hole in it), and attach the tag to the ribbon.
Or, you display the necklace on a necklace stand, attach the earrings or bracelet with pretty pins on the same stand (I found mine in the quilting section), and attach a handmade tag to it, with pin or ribbon, specifying the price for the set.
Hope this help

I always save my Christmas cards from year to year. They make great gift cards. I cut off the portion or scene of the card that I like and leave enough to fold over to attach the earrings and/or necklace. This would also work for everyday cards too. Hope this helps.

Would you be good enough to tell me where I can buy the tear apart perforated print your own business card paper. If you could tell me what office supply company you bought them from.

Thank you so much. Jill Ting

Thanks! And where I got mine
by: Rena

Thanks so much to all for your lovely feedback and great extra ideas! :o)

And in answer to Jill's question, I bought mine a few years ago on a clearance sale at Staples office supply store. I bought several packs in all kinds of different designs, to suit all kinds of customers and gift occasions.

I think most office suppliers carry print-your-own business cards, usually in the area where they have computer paper and cardstock.

thanks

thank you very much for the information.

I saw in a forum, I don't remember which one where someone made their own perforated cards by running the card thru their sewing machine with no thread in the needle. This makes a row of perforation across the card.

Fabulous!

See? That is one of the many reasons I love this site! So many great, practical an economical ideas!

Jewelry Info
by: Rita Nealy

Wonderful idea, I use a similar idea by telling how the jewelry design was created. I tell about a particular stone or the meaning of a color or give an inspirational word. These cards are also excellent as jewelry tags but always remember to put your business contact into on the back. They are also excellent to use as a future purchase discount for regular customers. Because they have a pretty design on them they are easy to spot in a woman's purse or wallet.
