My color sceme is red/black & white. All tables are covered in black, and busts are red & white. I think the red gets the customers' attention, and draws them in.

I use cardboard shelving covered with cloth, and of course my tables are also covered to the floor, which in most really good shows is a requirement.

I have found that displaying in levels shows the best, at least for me.

With this setup I can display 900 pieces of one of a kind pieces.

It gives your booth an energetic, positive feeling.

I don't know why I've always done my booth in neutral colors - especially now that I see the power of your elegant red.

I love the step idea. I use one step per table but this is really a nice vertical set up. You say cardboard shelves. Can you describe this a little better for me? It seems light weight. I need a little more weight for outdoor display.

Carboard shelving

The Cardboard shelves I use are inter-locked together which makes them very strong.
I use these shelves inside and outside, I have never lost a shelf in a wind, mainly because, which ever sides of my booth I put the shelves on I leave th4 sides of mt Canope down, that was the wind doesn't hit so hard. I only lost the busts on the shelves once, and that's when a thunderstorm was comming.
I do more outside shows than inside shows.
They run around 18 to 20 dollars a set.

white display items

How to you keep your white busts, etc., white? Mine always look dingy and scruffy after a couple of uses.
I've tried the ol' lint roller trick on the "velvet" ones, but it doesn't help much. The leatherette ones don't "wipe clean" as claimed, either. And my white half-torsoes need to wear clothes to cover up the scuffs they've acquired....

Protecting Jewelry Busts

Hi Kaytee,

Have you tried storing your busts in individual plastic bags during storage and transporting to shows?

I've found that 1- or 2-gallon ziplock bags accommodate nearly any bust - or you could also re-use plastic shopping bags for storing busts individually.

Wrapping them in bubble wrap (also can recycle a used sheet of it), or making your own bubble-wrap storage pouches for your busts, held together with shipping tape, also protects them.

For me, it seems like damage or wear & tear to my displays is more likely to occur during transport than during the show itself.

Accumulated dust and dirt, on the other hand, usually happen during the show.

Cleaning the leatherette Busts

I wrap the leatherette busts in plastic bags also. I had a friend who sold shoes on line and when they were returned they were touched up with a leather cleaning spray. Try shoe stores for the spray and see if it will work. Best of luck.

Leatherett Busts

At our jewelry store, we use 409 to clean our leatherette displays. Spray a cloth and rub the dirt out. It works every time!

Cleaning white displays

409, Oxiclean, and even cleanser, are not able to completely remove marks from my displays. I do store items in bags-- shopping or garbage bags, mainly, because many are too big for anything else. Some have yellowed-- air quality? storage outgassing? something else?

I had quite a few of the velvet covered cardboard ones "permanently grayed" by smoke/ash from the wildfires a few years ago-- even ones still in their original packaging. Vacuuming didn't help-- I think the color is in the fibers.

I'll probably be spray-painting my half torsoes, and maybe some of the "leatherette" items this fall for a show our bead society is putting on. The lady who's in charge of decor is envisioning purple as the theme color, and for some reason, the PTBs don't want to special order purple displays nor let her paint the ones belonging to the bead society.

To me, red says "stop!" so I would never use it for a main color in a display.

IMO I think something neutral is a lot better, it doesn't compete with the color in jewelry (assuming you have multicolored jewelry and it's not just plain metal)

Red White and Black

As a shopper , I would not enter the booth...its too visually chaotic! The big signage, the various levels, and all the contrasting colors make the jewelry itself disappear. The red is just too much on the necklace stands.

Although Red IS my favorite color, and I use it heavily in my own jewelry, I would seek out a more calming booth as a buyer, and design one as a seller also.

Shopers have to battle fatigued and visual overload at shows to begin with..not to mention the battle with the funds available to spend LOL.

Red display

To each their own, I have done this for a VERY long time, and have used all color schemes, this one has packed my booth at all shows I've done.
At almost all the shows I have done I hsve own 1st,& 2nd, place in booth compition. Red, black, & white isn't for everyone, but it workd for me.
As for storing my busts, I use the file type folders the scrapbookers use to store their paper. You can put (depending on the size of your necklace) 2 busts in each slot, then I put the file folders in a very large clear tote to keep clean. As for marks, when the busts get to badI just replace then.
As for cleaning, I prefer to use windex. I use windex also on the red busts too.
Like I said I've been doing this for 30 plus years, and this scheme works for me.

got the risers!

Hi Jackie
I went on line and ordered a set of the cardboard risers that you use. They finally came this week.
I just finished messing around with them. They are up and standing in my family room right now. But the issue I am concerned with is that they are really flimsy. How long does it take you to erect them before your show? I like the fact that they will store flat but dislike the amount of time they take to put together.
Let me know how you handle this issue and it it gets easier over time.

The risers are if put together properly are sound. and covered are strong enough to hold all you jewelry busts. The time it takes to put them together shortens every tine you put them up.
